La to LA: Willie Mae's Scotch House will open a new location in Los Angeles this summer Where NOLA Eats

At 3am Monday morning we woke up to news that Willie Mae’s Scotch House was on fire. After a thorough investigation we know an electrical fire triggered the sprinkler system and both left the restaurant severely damaged. Southern Foodways and its volunteers had done an amazing job.

Hungry For More In NOLA?

In fact, the place was now totally packed with a combination of neighborhood folks and conference-goers who all knew that Willie Mae's bird is the word. It takes serious nerve to describe your food as the best. However, in this case, the made-to-order fried chicken lived up to the illustrious description.

While the menu at Willie Mae’s Scotch House features items like fried catfish and a seafood platter, we’re not sure who orders those dishes. To us, that’s like ordering chicken or steak at a seafood restaurant. We recommend ordering the mixed fried chicken platter which is what we ordered during both of our meals.

The only thing missing was Willie Mae herself, no longer well enough to stand at the stove frying chicken in her cast-iron pans. We took one of them and told our server we had ordered ahead of time. I went outside to take some photos, and when I returned, someone else had taken our table.

We don’t know how she makes such succulent chicken on a grand scale. Although we saw the fryers working their magic in the kitchen, it’s still a mystery to us. Food travelers flock to Willie Mae’s based on accolades bestowed by the likes of the James Beard Foundation, the Food Network and the Travel Channel. The restaurant staff handles the crowds with aplomb and grace. In other words, don’t feel dismayed if you encounter a long queue when you arrive at Willie Maes. Our favorite places to eat in the land of above-ground cemeteries and excellent Creole food.

We were hooked from our first bites and still smitten as we covertly licked our fingers after the final bites. We reminded ourselves that this is what we do when we travel… We walk and eat and then walk and eat some more in an ongoing quest to find the best food in the world. A New Orleans restaurant with decades of history as a neighborhood anchor is facing a challenging new chapter. Any parties of five (5) or more, a 20% gratuity will be added. NO EXCEPTIONS.Anyone sharing plates will be charged a $4.00 plate charge due to limited capacity. One (1) ticket per table. President Barack Obama stops at Willie Mae's Scotch House for lunch at St. Ann and N.

Since launching the site in 2012, they’ve traveled to over 40 countries in their quest to bring readers a unique taste of the world. UpdateWe returned in 2021 for a repeat lunch at Willie Mae’s and the food and service were just as good as we remembered. Although we felt safe walking through the shabby, gentrifying neighborhood filled with corner shops and shotgun shacks, we weren’t sure about our decision to take a two-mile walk for lunch on our last day in New Orleans. The restaurant and its neighborhood were devastated by the levee failures after Hurricane Katrina.

She continued to run her homie Treme restaurant as it grew in popularity and even made her way back to New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina to keep her secret recipe alive. In 2005 Willie Mae won the "American Classics" James Beard Award for local restaurants that keep regional culinary traditions alive. With international acclaim and the love of an entire city, Willie Mae Seaton passed away in the fall of 2015. Her great-granddaughter, Kerry Seaton, continues to run the restaurant and preserve this incredible local gem. Beloved fried chicken restaurant Willie Mae’s Scotch House suffered a tragedy on Monday, April 10, when a fire took over the building at 2401 St. Ann Street. Located on the edge of Treme, Willie Mae’s is a cultural institution in New Orleans and is beloved for having some of the best fried chicken in the city, if not the country. Opened in 1957 by Willie Mae Seaton, the establishment is now run by her great-granddaughter Kerry Seaton-Stewart.

We decided that the only way for our ill-conceived plan to work was to call Willie Mae's ahead of time to order our chicken. I called Kerry, whom I had gotten to know when she and her grandmother came to New York a few years back to receive an America's Classic Award from the James Beard Foundation. Where was Fast & Furious 9 filmed? The House & ALL the Filming Locations: Montequinto

the fast and the furious house

Though Dom does wind up dropping him, Brian swoops in to save him. In real life, David’s building is known as the Stratford Hotel and houses 93 apartment units. The rear side of the four-story structure was also featured in one of the opening scenes of Fast & Furious as the spot where Brian captures a suspect after a long foot chase through Downtown L.A. After smoking a Ferrari in a street race, Dom and Brian head to Neptune’s Net Fast and Furious restaurant, which is really a landmark Malibu restaurant that was originally established in 1958. On the patio of the seaside eatery, Brian tells Dom that he wants in on Dom’s illegal activities.

Location

This time, as I watched the film, I was struck by the actual design of the home - which reminded me a lot of the John Lautner-designed homes I've been blogging about recently. In researching those, I had hit upon one that I thought could possibly have been the one used in THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS. The Fast and the Furious premiered at the Mann Village Theatre in Los Angeles on June 18, 2001, and was released in the United States on June 22, by Universal Pictures. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for the action sequences and the performances (most notably Diesel and Walker), with the film considered their breakthrough roles, but with most criticism directed towards the story.

Sequel

When The Fast and Furious star Paul Walker died in a car crash at the age of 40, the LAPD had to warn her that they were expecting gatherings of up to 10,000 people at her house. In the end, the gatherings at her home didn’t reach those numbers, with most people choosing to gather at the crash site rather than at her house. With the huge popularity of the Fast and the Furious franchise, the home of Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) became a tourist spot for fans. Fans would gather outside and take photos; however, it was when fans would knock on the door that it began to become overwhelming for Marianne, who is on record stating that it was stressful at times. The final race, with the train, is on Terminal Way, Terminal Island. The ‘Race Wars’ rally was filmed at San Bernardino International Airport, East Third Street at Del Rosa Drive, San Bernardino.

Brian reveals his identity to a distraught Mia, convincing her to help him knowing their danger. Dom, Letty, Vince, and Leon attempt to hijack the truck; the driver fires on Vince, critically injuring him and running Letty off the road in the process. Brian and Mia catch up to help, but Brian is forced to reveal his identity when he calls for MEDEVAC to save Vince. Dom, Mia, Letty, and Leon flee the scene before the police arrive. The house doesn’t appear in all the “Fast and Furious” movies, yet it gets dozens of visits from fans every week.

The film is set after "Fast & Furious 6" and continues from the end of "Tokyo Drift." It also marked the last appearance of Brian O'Conner played by Paul Walker, who died in 2013. Toretto and O'Conner are back in the fifth installment, released in 2011. The duo, along with Mia Toretto (Jordana Brewster), plan a heist to steal from a corrupt businessman.

The Fast and Furious House

However, before they said grace, Brian arrived in his blue Nissan Skyline to join his former crew mates. Maybe the charitable interpretation is that the movies show an aspirational sort of friendship, a chosen family that is loving, supportive, multicultural, and badass. And the chance to feel close to that is worth the pilgrimage and pissing off a few neighbors. In 2023 the Fast and the Furious house was empty, and on the rental market; whether or not it’s still owned by Marianne, we are just not sure.

At this point in time, it is reportedly the second largest private residence in the greater Los Angeles area after the Spelling Manor. One location that I am asked about constantly is the mid-century modern-style, circular-shaped home that served as the LAPD/FBI undercover headquarters in the 2001 flick The Fast and the Furious. Following the destruction of Brian's 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse, which Brian owed to Dom, as well as saving Dom from the police, Dominic invited him to his home as a way of thanking him. His presence put Dominic's friends, Letty, Leon, Jesse and Vince on edge and created distrust in the atmosphere of the party taking place in his living room. While Vince was vocal about his mistrust of Brian, Dominic and Mia welcomed him into their home, and eventually he integrated into their makeshift family.

When Dom's crew arrives—Vince, Leon, Jesse, and Dom's girlfriend Letty—Vince becomes suspicious of Brian and picks a fight with him. Brian is promptly fired from his job working undercover at Harry's Garage and banned from the Market. The Fast and the Furious house is located at 722 East Kensington Road in Echo Park, Los Angeles, California. Built in 1906, the four-bedroom property was an ordinary family home with very little notable history before it featured in The Fast And The Furious. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past twenty-plus years, the chances are you’ve seen at least one of the Fast and the Furious movies and will recognise the Fast and the Furious house that features heavily throughout the franchise. The first big nighttime car rally, where O'Conner wagers his car against Toretto, takes place alongside the giant warehouses on Clock Street, off South Alameda Street, just below 7th Street south of Downtown.

Yet, she can’t help but feel a connection to “Fast and Furious,” one that surprises her at times. The house itself is blurred out on Google Maps, and the yard is decorated with handfuls of very clear “Keep Out” signs. And yet, on any given afternoon, a handful of tourists are almost always taking pictures, walking by slowly and pretending not to stare.

Neighbors say the looky-loos don’t really bother them, except for the minor annoyance of sidewalk clutter and the regular appearance of double-parked cars and extra traffic in an already parking-challenged area. Seeking revenge for Letty’s death in Fast & Furious, Dom heads to the apartment of David Park (Ron Yuan) to gather some intel. When David proves tight-lipped, Dom hangs him by his feet out of a fourth floor window.

There is no ‘El Gato Negro’, this was nothing more than a set built on a vacant lot in El Segundo. The ensuing race itself was filmed on Prairie Avenue, between 120th Street and 118th Street, just south of Imperial Highway in Hawthorne. And nearby, a hometown hardware store grew into mega retailer now known as Lowe’s, headquartered today in Mooresville. Still other locally born brands, including Cheerwine and Bojangles’ Famous Chicken n’ Biscuits, also came to regional prominence thanks to Charlotte-area entrepreneurs. Late last month, the royal parents marked the 5th birthday of Princess Charlotte's little brother Prince Louis with two new snaps — breaking with tradition by issuing pictures taken by a professional photographer rather than by Kate. In fact, the Princess of Wales made a surprise cameo appearance in one of the two images, taking Prince Louis for a ride in a wheelbarrow.

The Spangler Library is especially designed to engage all children’s levels, hoping to instill a love of lifelong reading in its young visitors. There is something there for your baby or toddler as well as your emerging and fluent readers. Guests can walk a short nature trail to visit their enclosures to see hawks, eagles, falcons, owls, ospreys, vultures, and others in a variety of habitats. Many of the birds are rescues, and the Center also takes in injured animals as well. In my hometown suburb of Davidson, North Carolina, we have multiple entrances to our greenway system weaving into Cornelius, Huntersville and beyond. Every weekend, the greenways are filled with families walking, jogging, and biking.

But upscale restaurants still barred African Americans – until a remarkable series of events unfolded in May of 1963. Crusading dentist Dr. Reginald Hawkins led a march from JCSU to City Hall demanding total desegregation. Cities elsewhere in the South were meeting such requests with police dogs and firehoses. Then-mayor Stan Brookshire determined that Charlotte would be different. He phoned Chamber of Commerce leaders and quietly arranged for white-Black pairs to eat lunch, integrating each restaurant. The action – coming a year before the 1964 Civil Rights Act which required integration in all public places – gained national notice for Charlotte.

Poloche is survived by a wife and two children, and Elliot and his wife were parents to one child, state Adult Correction Secretary Todd Ishee said in a statement. Officials believe two people fired at law enforcement, Jennings said. Jennings said the fallen officers were "heroes that were just simply trying to keep our community safe." Charlotte Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police President Daniel Redford said the suspect's record speaks to the heroism displayed by law enforcement Monday.

About 30 minutes north of the city is the Lazy 5 Ranch located in Mooresville, one of the towns along Lake Norman’s shoreline. Mooresville offers several great outdoor activities for families such as pumpkin patches and strawberry farms, but our favorite activity there is Lazy 5 because of the amazing up-close animal encounters. Charlotte itself is not on a lake, but just north of the city is Lake Norman, the largest manmade lake in the state of North Carolina.

The Speedway also offers STEAM programs that focus on the physics of racing to help kids have fun while learning. While many kids may enjoy the thrill of watching a real race, that’s a big outing. Thankfully, visitors to the area at other times of year can experience the attraction in other ways. Top on my personal list of places to visit is the NASCAR Hall of Fame in uptown Charlotte. The Charlotte area, and in particular, Concord, North Carolina, is home to NASCAR royalty such as Jeff Gordon, Kyle Petty, and Denny Hamlin. In fact, more than 75% of the NASCAR race teams and employees live nearby.

A subsequent study by Neilsen ranked Charlotte the fastest-growing major Latino metropolis in the entire U.S. from 2000 to 2013. She is third in line for the British throne, after her father and her older brother Prince George of Wales. At Independence Square, in the heart of Uptown, four statues tower over Tryon and Trade streets. In auto racing, Charlotte had long been in the big league, ever since NASCAR ran its first-ever professional stock car race at a local dirt track in 1949.

Her younger brother, Prince Louis, turned 4 on April 23, and her older brother, Prince George, turns 9 on July 22. Historic Charlotte home sales are not your typical resale and having someone knowledgeable in selling them, truly makes a difference in a successful sale. The authorities shut down the city’s Shannon Park neighborhood, east of downtown, on Monday afternoon after gunfire erupted in order to more easily move victims to hospitals, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department wrote on social media. Eyer, the CMPD officer whose death was announced Monday night, is survived by his wife and a 3-year-old son, the police chief said. The violence broke out as the task force was serving a warrant on a suspect in possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

You may have heard that the latest installment in the popular FAST AND FURIOUS series of movies is currently breaking records in theaters. I suppose I contributed to that by seeing it myself on its first full day of release. Prior to going, I actually re-watched the previous installments, starting with 2001's THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS. I had seen that film before and had a vague recollection of the distinctive home used by Ted "It rubs the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again" Levine's character as a make-shift police HQ.

Unlike most of the store’s residential neighbors, Bob’s Market doesn’t seem to suffer from the publicity. There are cases of model cars for sale, hats, and other merchandise. The plentiful bollards out front may not help their photos, but the parking spots prove more than a little practical at Bob’s. Those are loud, disruptive, and sometimes dangerous, a regular source of stress to locals for most of the last 20 years. In March of this year, officials put forward a plan to adjust the traffic flow at the intersection, with the goal of implementing the changes before the release of Fast X on May 19. In Furious 7, the property was blown up (on-screen); however, it was never damaged in real life and remains standing today.

In The Fast and the Furious franchise

Toretto's House, the Echo Park home of Dominic and his sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster) appears in several of the Fast and Furious movies. Both the interior and the exterior of the two-story structure were utilized in the films, most notably in the first installment. For the shoot, director Rob Cohen had the owner paint the 1906 dwelling white so that the gang’s bright cars would stand out against it.

Not everyone knows this, but Diesel got his start directing little indie movies like Strays and the short Multi-Facial. He directed this 20-minute film, too, which approximates what a Fast & Furious TV show might look like. Los Bandoleros is a lo-fi effort shot with handheld cameras and set in the Dominican Republic, where Dom, Han, and others have to rob an oil tanker. It’s intended to explain what he was up to during the time frame of 2 Fast 2 Furious.

the fast and the furious house

The house soon became a center of conflict when a runaway Jesse returned to Dominic with the car he owed Johnny Tran. When Jesse was killed in Lance and Johnny Tran's drive-by, Mia was the only person left at the house with Jesse's body. Now a dizzying array of yellow plastic bollards is strewn all over the space, and two newly manufactured roundabouts and several one-way street signs were also added. Instead of a giant canvas marked with tire tread, it’s now an obstacle course of bright plastic, a disorienting jumble of yellow in unpredictable patterns in the middle of the asphalt. At least until everyone gets the hang of it, and then it may become light work for the Drift King. Letty’s (Michelle Rodriguez) funeral in Fast & Furious is held at Sunnyside Cemetery in Long Beach.

The residence’s detached garage, where Dom keeps his 1970 Dodge Charger R/T, was demolished at some point after the filming of The Fast and the Furious and had to be rebuilt for Fast & Furious (2009). Though the Toretto's house meets its untimely demise in Furious 7 when it’s blown up by Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham), in real life it is still standing and looks much the same as it did onscreen. The Fast and the Furious entered development in late 1998, its concept inspired by Li's Vibe article about illegal street racing. Principal photography began in July 2000 and finished that October, with filming locations primarily including Los Angeles and the surrounding area in southern California. “A lot of the bonding took place at that house,” Rob Cohen, the director of the original installment, The Fast and the Furious (2001), tells Yahoo Movies. Cohen says that the sequences shot there were among the first filmed.

Wishing to locate his plot in Los Angeles, he chose the Echo Park neighborhood because of its hilly streets. Toretto’s house is 722 East Kensington Road, and ‘Toretto’s market and diner’, where O'Conner insinuates himself into the community, is the nearby friendly local grocery store Bob’s Market, 1234 Bellevue Avenue at Kensington Road. Echo Park is also the neighbourhood of Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler, and you might have spotted Bob’s Market alongside the Dodge Challenger as he waits for police messages.

All day long, it seems people are gawking at or posing in front of the house. They’re mostly young, teenagers or 20-somethings, and they come from all over the world. This house is on their list of things to see in L.A., right up there with the beach and Beverly Hills. Perhaps because it’s so closely intertwined with Vin Diesel’s beloved Toretto.

"One Last Ride" Road Split - Templin Highway

So, here is how many “Fast and Furious” movies there are, including the original series and spin offs, as well as the correct order to watch. From the main franchise and spin-offs to short films and a television show, the "Fast and Furious" has enough content to keep anyone occupied. This film introduces Jason Momoa as the latest villain to terrorize Dom and his team — delivering on explosions, dramatic pauses whenever lines about “family” are spoken, and even a neutron bomb. It’s out in theaters now, so don’t expect it to stream anywhere for at least a few months.

the fast and the furious house

Brian foregoes his arrest of Dom and gives chase to Tran and Lance, with Dom getting into his father's 1970 Charger R/T to pursue Tran and avenge Jesse. During the chase, Dom runs Lance off the road and Brian kills Tran. Brian then pursues Dom, and the two agree to a quarter-mile race over a railroad crossing. The race narrowly ends in a draw, but Dom is t-boned by a passing truck. Instead of arresting him, Brian hands over the keys to his Supra, reminding Dom he was owed a ten-second car. Brian brings a modified 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS to a car meet, hoping to find a lead on the heist crew.

The film's success spawned a franchise, and it was followed by the sequel 2 Fast 2 Furious in 2003. In The Fast and the Furious, Sgt. Tanner (Ted Levine) says of the circular abode, “You know, Eddie Fisher built this house for Elizabeth Taylor in the ‘50s.”  That anecdote is actually untrue, though. Back in 2000, the real-life owners of Toretto’s house didn’t see this coming. “We never thought this would be a series of films,” says Marianne, a painter and art teacher originally from Mexico, who asked only to be identified by her first name, because privacy is already a struggle. Marianne and her husband, Damian, bought the four-bedroom, 100-year-old house about 16 years ago with a friend.

The "Fast and Furious" release from 2021 sees Toretto and family coming together to foil a world-shattering plot headed by Cipher and Toretto's estranged younger brother Jakob (John Cena). There are other movies in the series, including a "Hobbs and Shaw" spin off, its planned sequel and a planned, untitled, woman-led spin-off. I say "was" because this story doesn't have the happiest of endings. Conservancy had tried to save the home, it was demolished and the promontory leveled so that a new home could be built.

When Mia tells him that it is not going to be that simple, Brian tells her that he has time. Later, Brian arrives to arrest Dom, but the latter demands he leave in order to save Jesse from the danger he's in from Tran's gang. Jesse arrives pleading for help, but is gunned down by Tran and Lance on motorcycles.

But a mysterious woman named Cipher (Charlize Theron) ends this, forcing Toretto to betray his family and join her. Spy Racers is better than any Fast & Furious cartoon should be, given that we’re talking about a live-action franchise that lives and dies on how cool its street races and impossible stunts look. It’s understandable why Tokyo Drift got the short shrift for years — it sometimes feels more like a spin-off than a sequel, due to its stars’ absence and faraway setting — but it also dramatically expanded the series’ ambitions. This film took the franchise international, winkingly self-referential (Vin Diesel’s pre-Marvel, very Marvel-esque stinger; “Han Seoul-Oh”), and flashier and more boldly self-assured than ever before in the hands of director Justin Lin. In a city that has been so thoroughly captured on film over the past 100 years or so, it’s easier to find a place that hasn’t appeared in a movie or TV show than one that has.

Anti-corruption campaigner Alexey Navalny proved that anyone, after investigative training and practice, can expose rights abuse at the highest levels of government. In that sense, the struggle against anti-democratic forces in the United States — the Trumpist faction of the GOP foremost among them — isn’t just an American issue.

It was just insane to be able to see those people in action and be able to work directly with them. Working with actual activists and organizers who are already part of organizations like the Inland Empire Black Worker Center, the Los Angeles Black Worker Center and the SoCal Black Worker Hub was just a great experience. It was only 3 days, but the people I met, the relationships I made, and just being able to see that many Black faces that were dedicated to supporting other Black people was something that you really can’t describe. It felt like the perfect time to be doing something like that because I’ve always struggled with thinking about whether or not my interests are going to match the real world and what’s actually going on.

The project echoes Pittsburgh’s original Freedom House initiative in the 1960s and 1970s and aims to transform community health in Western Pennsylvania today. It also means that both the world’s current hegemon and one of its most important rising powers are less willing to fight for democracy outside their borders, which is especially important given the report’s other findings. Many of the countries that experienced declines in freedom were smaller nations in the “partly free” category — governments potentially more amenable to diplomatic pressure from major powers. Undemocratic countries such as China have become increasingly willing to throw their weight around in support of friendly autocrats.

However, in recent years its democratic institutions have suffered erosion. Freedom House was founded in 1941 to rally policymakers and a broadly isolationist American public around the fight against Nazi Germany, and to raise awareness of the fascist threat to American security and values. In the decades since, Freedom House has established itself through its advocacy, programs, and research as the leading American organization devoted to the support and defense of democracy around the world.

Business leaders turn to Freedom House to help ensure that their actions support—rather than undermine—democracy. For more than 80 years, Freedom House has worked to defend human rights and promote democratic change by challenging unjust governments, defending civil liberties at home and abroad, and providing support for frontline activists who bravely strive for fundamental freedoms. We act as a catalyst for freedom through a unique combination of analysis, advocacy, and action.

To learn more about Freedom House’s policy positions and advocacy work, visit our Policy Recommendations page. Freedom in the World uses a two-tiered system consisting of scores and statuses. Total scores across the various categories are based on a 100-point scale and correspond to statues of Free, Partly Free, and Not Free. Freedom House is committed to editorial independence and is solely responsible for this report’s content. Advances in artificial intelligence are increasing the scale, speed, and efficiency of digital repression.

Freedom House analysts regularly issue interpretive assessments on repressive techniques employed by leading autocracies, including China, Turkey, and Russia. Freedom House is founded on the core conviction that freedom flourishes in democratic nations where governments are accountable to their people. We speak out against threats to democracy and empower individuals to exercise their fundamental rights through a unique combination of analysis, advocacy, and direct support to frontline defenders of freedom, especially those working in closed authoritarian societies. We enhance their ability to fight corruption, document and promote accountability for human rights abuses, and demand equal rights, especially for at-risk communities. We also conduct targeted campaigns for the release of imprisoned activists so that they can continue their work, often in exile, and help bring democratic change to their countries.

The Renew Democracy Initiative, a Washington D.C.-based nonprofit organization promoting democracy and American interest overseas, sent a letter Friday urging Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., to work together to get the REPO Act passed. The idea to confiscate the Russian assets, which emerged last year, has been hotly contested by economists and foreign policy experts. Russian President Vladimir Putin and his government invested heavily in the euro and the dollar over the years to keep the ruble stable, planting $300 billion worth of foreign currency reserves. The REPO Act, which would authorize Biden to confiscate the frozen Russian assets in U.S. banks and transfer them to a special fund for Ukraine, is part of the foreign aid package that was stalled for months in the House. More than $6 billion of the $300 billion in frozen Russian assets are sitting in U.S. banks.

Freedom House was founded in 1941 by a bipartisan group that included Wendell Willkie, the Republican presidential nominee in 1940, and Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of Democratic Pres. The founders believed that strengthening democracy was the best way to prevent the spread of totalitarian movements such as National Socialism (Nazism). Freedom House was an early proponent of the civil rights movement in the United States, and it took a strong stand against Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s persecution of individuals suspected, often groundlessly, of being communists.

Freedom in the World is the most widely read and cited report of its kind, tracking global trends in political rights and civil liberties for over 50 years. United States is rated Free in Freedom in the World 2024, Freedom House's annual study of political rights and civil liberties worldwide. The United States is a federal republic whose people benefit from a vibrant political system, a strong rule-of-law tradition, robust freedoms of expression and religious belief, and a wide array of other civil liberties.

It will change your life, and it will open your eyes to the world of organizing. In terms of overcoming it, it was just communicating with my superiors and my coworkers to make sure that we all were supporting each other, not just in the work but emotionally as well. In professional settings, people tend to forget that we’re all dealing with things as well.

The countries that score closest to 100 qualify as “free,” the ones closer to zero qualify as “not free,” and those around the midpoint fall into a mixed “partly free” category. The declines in the world’s two largest democracies, the United States and India, can be traced to the influence of the far-right ethno-nationalist political movements that held power in those nations. The pandemic enabled authoritarian-inclined leaders in places such as Hungary and the Philippines to seize more power for themselves. China used its rising clout to undermine freedoms both inside its borders and out.

This is just one paper, taking a fairly novel approach with a combination of a lot of data sets and looking at a very hot topic, so it’s not the last word on this issue. Hopefully, there will be many more studies to replicate or dispute the findings. Researchers Thomas Blanchet, Lucas Chancel, and Amory Gethin combined US and European data sets, from surveys to tax data to social insurance benefits, to get a comprehensive look at inequality before and after tax-and-transfer programs.

“I’m going to a allow an opportunity for every single member of the House to vote their conscience and their will on this,” Johnson told reporters, defending his decision to allow the vote to go forward Saturday. Freedom House’s five ambulances answered nearly 6,000 calls in the first year, saving more than 200 lives. Its work improved upon the former service by police, funeral homes, fire departments, and private companies not trained or equipped to provide emergency care. After all, one reason many countries were willing to embrace democratic models was the success of the US and other Western nations in the 20th century. If America no longer looks like a successful model — and if democracy keeps backsliding here too — that source of inspiration will dim.
